The national icon of Laos, the golden Pha That Luang temple from the 16th century, mixes in Vientiane with French colonial architecture. Numerous noteworthy shrines may be found along wide boulevards and lanes lined with trees, including Wat Si Saket, which houses thousands of Buddha images, and Wat Si Muang, which was constructed over a Hindu shrine.
